that rockets have been fired at jerusalem. this new escalation, that's according to the newspaper in israel, but this new escalation comes after a failed cease-fire between the israelis and the palestinians earlier today. israel had said that it held off the bombing for two hours because egypt's prime minister was inside gaza meeting with hamas leaders and the palestinians for their part are denying that. they're disputing it. this week's fighting we know this has left more than 200 people injured. three israeli soldiers are dead, there are reports of civilian israelis dead as well and 24 palestinians killed in gaza and israel is amassing tanks near the border with gaza and called up 16,000 army reservists. let's get you straight to cnn fred plaiken live in jerusalem at this hour. this is extraordinary. what do we know? where did the rockets land near jerusalem and what is being said about this? >> ashleigh, you're right. it is extraordinary and very much out of the ordinary many in jerusalem. the air raid sirens went off a little less than an hour ago. we could hear them. you heard a thud

're also following breaking news just awhile ago, more carnage in the battle between israel and gaza. a bomb exploded on a bus in tel aviv. injured at least ten people. happened right in front of israel's national defense headquarters. a spokesman for the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says this is a terrorist act. this as 100 israeli air strikes have killed more than 27 palestinians. the death toll in eight days there up to 137. the secretary of state hillary clinton is finishing up those direct talks this morning with the palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas. that's happening in ramallah on the west bank. and netanyahu, the prime minister, in jerusalem, another conversation she's having. now she goes to cairo where she's meeting with the egyptian president mursi. mrs. clinton making it clear that she is not interested in a quick fix in gaza. >> the goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability, and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of israelis and palestinians alike. >> cnn reporters flanking the middle east today to bring you th

the scenes to try to keep the conflict between israel and hamas from escalating. rockets and missiles are flying back and forth between gaza and israel with multiple deaths on both sides now. and right now there's fear this could become an all-out ground war. our senior international correspondent sara sidner is in gaza city for us right now. sara, what is the very latest on this extremely tense situation? >> reporter: we have just heard moments ago, wolf, another air strike, a huge boom and then a black plume of smoke. you can actually see that with your eyes even though it is very dark here now. as we're getting information in just right now from that latest air strike, we are hearing that there are several people who have been killed. perhaps several children. we're still looking into that right now. this is just one in a series of air strikes today that have been a barrage of blasts all day long followed by huge plumes of black smoke. but we have also seen dozens upon dozens of rockets leaving this area and areas all along the gaza strip into israel. i want to let you hear that. , our starting point this morning, israel mobilizing thousands of troops for a possible full-scale ground war with hamas. violence in the region intensifying overnight. the palestinian militants launched hundreds of rockets into israeli territory. air raid sirens sounding in tel aviv. that's the very first time that's happened since the gulf war. israelis responded by pounding hundreds of terror sites as they call them in gaza with artillery fire. ben wedeman reporting live now from jerusalem. we know, ben, that the israelis have called up 16,000 reservists. what exactly are they going to be doing? >> well, what they'll be doing is heading down into the area around gaza. very similar to what we saw in 2008, 2009, when they had a similar outbreak of violence between the two sides. we also know that there's a lot of heavy armor, lots of tanks being transported to the area around gaza, as well, for a possible ground incursion. but what we saw back in 2008-2009, was that it was several days of fairly intense israeli air strikes that preceded ground invasions. now what we've heard
